This is a low speed version of our four cylinder (max. only 2.600 rpm) and aimed at uses aboard small motor cruisers or Dutch sloeps, where greatest silence in operation is desired. At cruising speeds, 2000 rpm will hardly be exceeded although the base engine is designed for up to 4.800 rpm. As a result, the noisiest emission of an SDI 40-4 in a careful installation will often be the cooling water flow from the exhaust!

Easily meets EU standards and all expected future emission standards for marine engines.

The Saildrive

We have not invented this type of drive unit, but we refined it and offer it in combination with our very silent engines to explore new fields of application. This has even caused owners to install Volkswagen Marine Saildrive packages aboard motor boats which were originally designed for V-drive systems. The resulting reduction in noise and vibration levels is very hard to achieve with conventional shaft drives. The Volkswagen Marine Saildrive is available with all variants of our for cylinder, i.e. with ratings from 29 kW (40 hp) up to 55 kW (75 hp).
