In this respect, Volkswagen Marine surprised the marine press already before start of production and we continue to surprise people with engines that require almost no real maintenance work anymore during normal use. That is made possible firstly by our highly advanced base engines, all of which use hydraulic valve clearance control and allow longer oil change intervals than usual in the marine engine sector. Our 200 hour interval for oil change is still conservative and takes the special circumstances aboard pleasure boats into account such as long periods of standing still and the highly corrosive environment at sea. Moreover we use automatic drive belt tensioners, eliminating the often annoying task of manual drive belt trimming.
Another aspect is our lifetime air filters on all four- and five cylinder models, which never have to be replaced but merely require cleaning once per year.
And on top of all that, all our engines feature an electric oil change systems with built-in drain pumps that allow oil change at the touch of a button and in a white shirt if you wish. As no used oil drips into the bilge, this is also a contribution for a clean environment.
Finally, all our engines use electronic memories for rapid diagnosis, which comes close to an electronic logbook. Safety at sea is maximised by means of a quick release sea water pump with O-ring seal, which allows sea water impeller inspection within seconds.
