The concept was from the very beginning to make the leading technology of compact diesel engines made by Volkswagen available for the boating sector. This offers strong advantages in terms of compact dimensions, weight, power, fuel economy and emissions. In addition, we could invest the engineering potential of a globally leading motor company into the marinisation.

Engines are sold since October 2001, after a period of five years of research and development.

These power plants give you particular driving pleasure, require extremely little maintenance and may be used even on environmentally sensitive waters, where many other combustion engines are legally banned.

In addition, fuel cost against a petrol engine of similar power can be cut by 50% in typical use profiles.

It was decided from the beginning that the vast and highly professional car dealer network of Volkswagen group would not be ideal for Marine Engine distribution. Installing and servicing marine engines requires being familiar with boats. We have thus built up a special marine dealer network which is currently reaching all relevant areas in Europe. We currently offer four-, five- and six cylinder engines ranging from 29kw (40hp) to 165 kw (225 hp). The 111kw, 121 kw and 165 kw variants are particularly suitable for fast planing boats and can be delivered with ZF-Hurth reverse gears or sterndrives Mercruiser Bravo 1 and Bravo 3.

All other engines are delivered with hydraulically controlled ZF-Hurth reverse gears. Advanced saildrive systems are available in combination with our four cylinders at 29 kw, 37 kw and 44 kw.

Further engines are under development, with the goal to cover the entire power range from 40 to 300 hp.

Volkswagen Marine engines are already available in a wide range of different craft, ranging from luxurious steel motor cruisers like the Booncruiser 35 classic (boat of the year 2004 in the Netherlands) to fast powerboats with top speeds over 40 knots.

If you look for a particular boat, you may always insist on Volkswagen Marine even if the engine is not yet on the price list for the boat in most cases, your wish can be served.
